Club 56 Retreat

Fourteen 5th and 6th graders plus sponsors got together this past weekend for a day retreat at Camp Broadway. The theme was The Gospel According to Harry Potter.  The group explored biblical topics such as The Love of Power vs the Power of Love, Overcoming Temptation, and Many Gifts, One Body in a Harry Potter theme day of Bible study, fellowship, and fun activities. 

Stewardship 2021 -2022
The 2021-2022 stewardship theme is “Courage and Generosity.” All members received a pledge card and stewardship brochure along with a return mail-in envelope. If you have not already, please prayerfully consider submitting your pledge now.

2020 World Hunger Offering for Gori Soup Kitchen
Sunday, November 22, 2020 
Nearly 700 million people worldwide go hungry each day. Food insecurity is on the rise in our nation and around the world as a result of the global pandemic and economic hardship. On Sunday, November 22, Broadway is collecting an offering to help address world hunger. Proceeds from this year’s offering will go to support the soup kitchen in Gori in the Republic of Georgia. The soup kitchen serves hundreds of meals each week to refugees and people battling food insecurity in this war-torn country. The soup kitchen is a ministry of the Evangelical Baptist Church in the Republic of Georgia, a global missions partner. Broadway has a developed a good partnership with these friends through the Alliance of Baptists, and Broadway members Sara Kelm and Becky Delaune visited this ministry back in 2019.

You can make your contributions to the Offering for World Hunger using this link: World Hunger Offering.  You may also make a donation through our website and on the church’s mobile app by Clicking on Give > Events tab, as well as mailing in an offering to the church.  We will also be collecting these offerings at our in-person worship services on November 15 and 22. Checks should indicate in the memo line that they are for the Offering for World Hunger.

BBC Youth
May Street Market Scavenger Hunt
 The BBC Youth will be having a friendly competition between youth classes in collecting canned goods for the May Street Market on Sunday November 15 and 22. There will be shopping carts for each of the youth classes in the Narthex and people in the congregation can bring items to donate to a particular youth’s shopping cart….or you can donate online here.  Mobile app users will see an “Events” tab on the Giving module where you can submit an online donation. 

All types of dry goods and canned goods will be accepted, however certain items will be given special points. The class with the highest points wins a prize.

Bags or boxes of mashed potatoes—40 pts
Bags or boxes of stuffing—30 pts
Cans of Pumpkin—20 pts
Cans of cranberry sauce—10pts

Offering Envelopes 
Do you receive an offering envelope by mail? Do wish to start or stop receiving them? Or need to make a change to the name and address listed on you envelope? Please contact Jenn Nelson in the church office by Monday, November 16 to provide updates or request a mailing change. The next quarterly mailing packets will be going out in January. 

Ready for Winter
On Thursday, November 5, Broadway held its annual coat distribution for our neighbors and friends experiencing homelessness. Even with last week’s warmer temperatures, we distributed 75 coats. This year, we also distributed gloves and knit caps to go along with the coats. Our partners at First Mission distributed another 40 coats. We will continue to provide coats to our guests while our supplies last. Thanks to everyone who generously donated coats this year and to all the volunteers that helped with this year’s distribution. 

Healthy Reading Habits
Last week, Broadway volunteers assembled nearly 850 student reading kits and distributed them to 21 Community Centers across Tarrant County. The books and materials were provided through Reading Partners North Texas and The Morris Foundation. Students in grades K-8 who participate in afterschool programs at the centers will use the kits, which include grade-specific books, lesson plans, activities, and resources, to develop healthy reading habits.

 

Agape Meal Time Change
Broadway continues to serve our weekly Agape Meal by providing hot, to-go meals for our friends and neighbors. With the end of Daylight Savings Time, we have adjusted our service on Thursday nights to 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. This will allow us to share a meal with our neighbors during daylight hours and ensure everyone’s safety. If you are interested in helping serve at the Agape Meal, contact Peter Nelson for more information.   
 

The next scheduled Deacon Board meeting is Monday, November 16 at 6:30 p.m. This will be a virtual meeting held via Zoom. All Broadway members are welcome to attend if interested. Please email deacons@broadwaybc.org for more information. 

Dina’s Glen:  The Quiet House at Camp Broadway

In the Broadway (not us) musical South Pacific, Nellie teaches the children that “you got to have a dream, if you don’t have a dream, how you gonna have a dream come true?”
 
Dreams are funny things.  Sometimes just the dream itself is worth the spiritual energy—having something to think about and work toward.  Dreams unrealized can bring disappointment—even pain.  But just the act of dreaming is a spiritual enterprise that can build faith – and sometimes produce unfathomable and unimaginable blessings.  One such dream came true this month…Dina’s dream.
 
Dina and Bud Smith joined Broadway in 1933. Bud’s job necessitated several moves, but when they returned to Fort Worth in 1958, they rejoined Broadway and were active members for the duration of their lives.  Bud and Dina dedicated their energies in serving others and their family spent many happy times at Camp Broadway. When Bud died in 1998, Dina gifted the nearby prayer garden in his memory.
 
On one of the Broadway adult retreats to Laity Lodge, Dina visited and fell in love with the Quiet House, and God filled her heart with the desire for Broadway to be able to offer a similar venue of retreat, reflection, renewal, and regeneration for church members and guests.  She encouraged Broadway to consider such a facility at the Camp, and gave of her energy and means toward its creation. She continued her gentle encouragement until her death in 2010 at the age of 96.
 
During the ensuing years, other church ministries understandably claimed priority, but her daughter, Patti Wooley, never gave up on Dina’s dream of having a Quiet House here at the Camp.
 
With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, traditional activities were put on hold, staff and committee members suddenly had the time and energy for new kinds of ministry…at last, the time for the Quiet House had come.
 
Our dream for the Quiet House is the dream that Dina had for so many years…To be a place for ministers, musician, artist, writers, and individuals and couples to come for a respite from their everyday life.  A place of beauty, a place of inspiration, a place for renewal. The Quiet House and the Prayer Garden together make up Dina’s Glen, and we thank God for her vision, her generosity, and her gentle prodding to make this day possible.  The dedication of this special place last Sunday begins a new season for Camp Broadway. 
 
Isaiah 30:5 says, “In returning and rest shall you be saved; In quietness and confidence shall be your strength.  Let it be so.  Amen

Grants Available for Members in Need
Many members of our congregation are feeling the financial effects of the COVID 19 crisis.  Some have been furloughed from their jobs, some have incurred medical expenses, while others have lost their livelihood altogether.  In an attempt to assist with the many needs arising from this crisis, funds from the Congregational Care and the pastoral care budgets are being made available for our members.
 
Each grant amount will be up to $500, depending on the need of the individual or family.  We are asking that members in need of assistance complete a simple grant application form.  Information from the application will be kept in strict confidence.  Our Pastoral staff will review the applications and make the grant assignments.
