COMMUNITY CORNER
Volunteers Needed
As a result of the recent storms, many Broadway members as well as neighbors in our community need assistance with minor home repair projects. If you are interested and available to help with these requests, contact Peter Nelson for more information. Thanks.
February by the Numbers
Even with those unexpected closures and cancellations, it was still a very busy month. Here’s a report of essential services provided in February:

  • Sack Lunches: 754 lunches distributed
  • Groceries: 201 households served (667 persons)
  • Agape Meal: 165 guests served
  • Samaritan House Meals: 405 meals delivered
  • Adult Clothing Ministry: 53 people served
  • Rental Assistance: $1,800 in financial assistance provided

Thanks to our great staff and volunteers who make these ministries possible and those who give financially to support these ministries and partnerships.
Additionally, in response to the winter storms, we have distributed over 1000 cases of bottled water in partnership with Southside Church of Christ, Baker Chapel AME Church, Celebration Community Church, Catholic Charities, and Fort Worth ISD. We also continue to distribute cases of water to those without access to clean drinking water. If you are someone you know needs cases of bottled water, stop by the Community Center during regular hours.

Time Change for Agape Meal Begins March 18
This Sunday marks the beginning of Daylight Savings Time. As a result, we will change the time for our weekly Agape Meal. Beginning on Thursday, March 18, the Agape Meal will be served from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m., just outside the entrance to the Community Center. We continue to provide hot, to-go meals each week for our neighbors. Everyone is welcome. If you are interested in volunteering for the Agape Meal, contact Peter Nelson for more information.

Partnership Update: Clayton Youth Services
Next week is spring break for the Fort Worth ISD and school campuses will be closed. This can create a hardship for parents and guardians who are essential workers and rely on the school for childcare, meals, and more. Broadway is glad to welcome Clayton Youth Services back to our campus from March 15-19. Clayton will provide all-day childcare services and support on these days for children from kindergarten through fifth grade.

Clayton has used our facility for these services during other times when the FWISD school campuses have been closed. Clayton has a great experience in this area as well as extensive COVID-19 protocols in place to ensure the safety of all students and staff. If you or someone you know needs childcare during this spring break, contact Clayton for more information. Click here to learn more about this great partner.

Disaster Relief
Broadway’s Missions Committee approved using money from our Disaster Relief designated fund to help three ministry partners in need.

  • New Mount Rose Baptist Church
  • Baker Chapel AME
  • True Worth Place

These ministries experience significant damage to their facilities, and all three are important ministry partners with Broadway, serving the needs of the 76104 community.

Broadway is raising money through our Disaster Relief Designated Fund. Money raised will be used to help our members who have experienced loss and damage as a result of the severe weather as well as to help our ministry partners who have had significant damage to their facilities. You can donate to Broadway’s disaster relief fund here.

ECUMENICAL SPOTLIGHT
Baptist News Global
“Baptist News Global interprets Christianity and culture through compelling journalism that informs and motivates people to make a difference in the world.  It does this from a perspective that is Baptist in heritage and ecumenical in spirit.”

Baptists have long had a commitment to the 1st Amendment to the United States Constitution. Last month the Ecumenical Spotlight highlighted the Baptist Joint Committee on Religious Liberty. This month we focus on our commitment to a free press, specifically one that independently provides news, opinion and analysis on matters of faith.

Baptist News Global (BNG) was established in 1990 and is passionately committed to a free and faithful press. It is a non-profit, reader-supported organization and provides, at no cost to readers, a number of services including:

  • Daily News Feed: Sent every business day with headlines and links to the latest news and opinion articles.
  • Friday Roundup.: Sent each Friday with a brief letter from the Editor Mark Wingfield walking you through the news of the week.
  • Trending – Sent every Saturday morning with headlines and links to trending articles at baptistnews.com.
  • Breaking News – Sent periodically (typically once or twice a quarter) to alert readers to breaking news or developing stories of national interest.

The tagline for BNG, “Conversations That Matter,” leads BNG to host webinars and events that bring together experts to address significant matters from a faith perspective. The most recent one featured international religion expert Knox Thames discussing global religious persecution, the state of human rights, why American Christians should care about these things, and observations on what could or should happen in 2021. At these webinars, participants are able to ask questions in real time. Other recent webinars have presented Mark Galli, former editor of Christianity Today, and a panel of counselors and worship leaders to explore how to cope with pandemic holidays.

Broadway includes BNG in its Cooperative Funding budget because of the significant service it provides to all people of faith and particularly because of the resource it is for our members. For instance:

  • Sunday School classes have based studies on series such as “Truth Decay” by David Gushee (Distinguished University Professor of Christian Ethics and Director of the Center for Theology and Public Life at Mercer University), and a five-article series on Bonhoeffer Moments by Bill Leonard  (Founding Dean and James and Marilyn Dunn Professor of Baptist Studies and Church History at Wake Forest University School of Divinity).
  • Articles on social justice will be informative for the ACT Council and the new Justice Committee.
  • Explorations on how to worship during a pandemic can provide ideas and support for worship leaders.
  • Information on issues of faith around the world benefits each one of us.

Many of you reading this will remember that the immediate former editor of BNG  was David Wilkinson, the Minister of Education and Discipleship at Broadway from 2003-2007. The current editor and publisher is Mark Wingfield who served as associate pastor of one of our sister churches, Wilshire Baptist Church in Dallas, for 17 years. Harriet Harral serves on the BNG Board of Directors.

We encourage you to subscribe to BNG’s services. There is no cost to subscribe. Simply click on the link below:

Grants Available for Members in Need
Many members of our congregation are feeling the financial effects of the COVID 19 crisis.  Some have been furloughed from their jobs, some have incurred medical expenses, while others have lost their livelihood altogether.  In an attempt to assist with the many needs arising from this crisis, funds from the Congregational Care and the pastoral care budgets are being made available for our members.

Each grant amount will be up to $500, depending on the need of the individual or family.  We are asking that members in need of assistance complete a simple grant application form.  Information from the application will be kept in strict confidence.  Our Pastoral staff will review the applications and make the grant assignments.

If you and/or your family could use some help during these uncertain times, please email Fran Patterson for an application.  Also, if you are looking for ways to help during this crisis, please contact Fran.
