Promotion Sunday & Blessing of the Backpacks
We were excited to kick off the new school year this past Sunday as children and youth joined new classes and had a special “Blessing of the Backpacks” during our worship service. We are thankful to all of our children and youth volunteers who help minister to our kids each week. We pray for all of our students, teachers, and school staff who are returning to school.

Broadway Welcomes New Member
This past Sunday, August 15, Loveta Eastes made the decision to join the Broadway family. We are excited for the unique gifts and experience each new member brings to our growing congregation. Please join us in welcoming Loveta to Broadway!

THIS WEEK AT BROADWAY

Unity Across the City Service Postponed

In response to the rise in cases and hospitalizations due to the Delta variant of COVID-19 in Tarrant County, the Unity Across the City Service of Hope, Healing, and Help at Dickie’s arena is postponed and will be rescheduled at a later date. The faith leaders in the Circle of Clergy have decided this decision is the best way to care for the community and promote everyone’s safety. Follow @UnityAcrosstheCity to stay connected with The Circle of Clergy and view upcoming dates.

All Invited to Coffee & Fellowship in Room 302
Sundays at 9:00 a.m.

Make a plan to stop by the Good Shepherd Room this Sunday morning and meet up with other friends and guests of Broadway before your class starts. Coffee and pastries are served each Sunday from 9:00 – 9:30 in Room 302.

This week our coffee fellowship features delicious homemade pastries from our neighborhood friends at Stir Crazy Baked Goods as well as regular and decaf coffee from our local Starbucks. Hot tea is also available.

Broadway’s coffee fellowship is a pay-what-you-can coffee house. Everyone is encouraged to do one of three things:

  • pay what you can afford
  • pay what you would normally pay
  • pay it forward, i.e., pay what you normally would, plus a little extra

Stop by Sunday morning to support these great local businesses, enjoy some delicious coffee and pastries, and fellowship with your friends at Broadway.

Worship Sunday, August 22, at 10:50 a.m.
This Sunday, Jennifer Davis will lead the Children’s Sermon. The Chancel Choir will sing “How Lovely Is Thy Dwelling Place” by Johannes Brahms.  Ryon Price will preach from Ephesians 6:10-20.

Correction for August 15, 2021 Order of Worship:
Last Sunday’s Meditation of Preparation was inadvertently misattributed to Tommy Shapard. Tommy used the quote in his dissertation, but the meditation was written by Christopher Small in Musicking: The Meanings of Performing and Listening (pg. 13). Tommy Shapard wrote the Meditation of Response.

“A Sense of the Heart?” Rethinking Religious Experience and Conversion 2021

Baptists began as a “Believer’s Church”—baptizing those who acknowledge an experience of God’s grace through Christ. Today, older conversion “methods”—revivals, personal witness, sinner’s prayers—are waning or disappearing. What now?
Bill Leonard is Founding Dean and Professor of Divinity Emeritus, School of Divinity, Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C.

COMMUNITY CORNER
School Uniforms
Classes started this week for Fort Worth ISD students. Broadway is thankful we were able to help students and families get their school year off to a great start by providing uniforms to over 400 students from 205 families. Each student receives two shirts, two pants, socks, and underwear.

In particular, this year we partnered with Leonard Middle School to provide uniforms for their students and families. We received this note from Sara Gillaspie, Principal of Leonard Middle School.

“YOU ALL have been an unbelievable blessing to these students. Seriously, they are so proud of their uniforms!  You should have seen them dressed up so nicely.  I want to say that there is no question in our minds that having them dressed up like this had a direct impact on how they see themselves, how they hold themselves throughout the day, and how they behaved.  Your ministry has truly reached into the hearts and homes of well over 100 families here at Leonard. This is an amazing gift to our students!!  God bless you all”

This Thursday, August 19, is the last day for parents to register for school uniforms from 11:00 – noon at the Community Center. Parents should bring a photo ID, verification of school enrollment, and sizes for children. At registration, families will be given a date and time for uniform pickup later in August.

Thanks to Dawn Shepard, Community Center Director, and our amazing team of volunteers for making this year’s school uniform program a great success: Ann Ahearne, Helen Beasley, Gladys Jenson, Judy Kirby, and Ann Packer.

Community Center Needs
Even during the pandemic; we continue to distribute clothes to our neighbors in need through the Adult Clothing Room in our Community Center. At present, there is a great need for new and gently used men’s and women’s tennis shoes and comfortable walking shoes. All sizes are needed. You can drop these off at the Community Center between 9:00 – noon, Monday through Friday. Contact Dawn Shepard to arrange a different drop-off time. If you do not feel comfortable shopping for the shoes at this time, please consider making a financial donation to the Adult Clothing Room or Community Center. Thanks.

MORE THAN ONE WAY
Grants Available for Members in Need
Many members of our congregation are feeling the financial effects of the COVID 19 crisis.  Some have been furloughed from their jobs, some have incurred medical expenses, while others have lost their livelihood altogether.  To assist with the many needs arising from this crisis, funds from the Congregational Care and the pastoral care budgets are being made available for our members.

Each grant amount will be up to $500, depending on the need of the individual or family.  We are asking that members in need of assistance complete a simple grant application form.  Information from the application will be kept in strict confidence.  Our Pastoral staff will review the applications and make the grant assignments.

If you and/or your family could use some help during these uncertain times, please email Fran Patterson for an application.  Also, if you are looking for ways to help during this crisis, please contact Fran.
