All Invited to Coffee & Fellowship in Room 302
Sundays at 9:00 a.m.

This week our coffee fellowship features delicious homemade pastries from our neighborhood friends at Three Danes as well as regular and decaf coffee from our local Starbucks. Hot tea is also available.

Broadway’s coffee fellowship is a pay-what-you-can coffee house. Everyone is encouraged to do one of three things:

  • pay what you can afford
  • pay what you would normally pay

Stop by Sunday morning to support these great local businesses, enjoy some delicious coffee and pastries, and fellowship with your friends at Broadway.

Volunteers Needed to Assist Afghan Refugees
As we have witnessed the evacuation efforts in Afghanistan and seen tens of thousands of refugees fleeing the violence and insecurity in their country, our hearts and minds turn towards how we can help those who are being resettled. These families will need help adjusting to a new life, new reality, and a new location.

Broadway is partnering with World Relief and Karen Morrow with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship (CBF) to provide support and assistance for those who will be resettled in Fort Worth over the next several months. Volunteers are needed to help them during this time of resettlement with these types of tasks:

  • Pick up families from the airport
  • Pack welcome kits for families
  • Provide transportation to doctor appointments
  • Provide grocery store orientation
  • Provide public transit orientation
  • Assist with ESL classes
  • Assist with obtaining driver’s license
  • Assist with enrolling children in school

Volunteers should have their own transportation and be available to assist 2-3 hours per week. Orientation and training are provided through CBF and World Relief. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Peter Nelson for more information.

If you want to help but are not able to volunteer at this time, consider making a financial donation to support this ministry.

ECUMENICAL PARTNER SPOTLIGHT

Families on Mission with Karen Morrow, CBF Field Personnel
This summer Broadway’s Family Ministries held their first “Families on Mission” event. Families with children grade 6 and younger were invited to participate for two hours on a Wednesday night partnering with Karen Morrow, a CBF Field Personnel, who ministers with refugee families in Fort Worth. The families had fun making gift bags for kids new to our city and enjoyed a scavenger hunt for kitchen items to be donated. They also examined how to write “WELCOME” in several different languages and made a welcome craft for families coming to Fort Worth. Everyone learned more about refugees, their experience is like, and how we are called by Jesus to welcome them. We appreciate Karen for joining in this mission night and helping our families learn more about refugees, while sharing about her ministry.

Please read this thank you letter that Karen sent to Broadway in return here

COMMUNITY CORNER
August by the Numbers
August was another busy month at our Community Center as we continue to provide essential services to our neighbors and guests.

Here’s a brief report of services provided in August:

  • Sack Lunches: 1,174 lunches distributed
  • Groceries: 168 households served (472 persons)
  • Agape Meal: 328 guests served
  • Adult Clothing Ministry: 123 people served
  • Rental Assistance: $800 in financial assistance provided
  • Diaper Bank: 16 families served

Additionally, we have distributed thousands of bottles of water during August and throughout the summer. Thanks to our great staff and volunteers who make these ministries possible and those who give financially to support these ministries and partnerships.

Disaster Relief for Haiti
Broadway’s Missions Committee recently approved donating $5,000 from our church’s disaster relief fund to efforts in Haiti being led by the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. Haiti suffered a severe 7.2 earthquake on August 14. Latest figures list the death toll at over 2,200 people and over 12,000 injured. Over 135,000 buildings were damaged or destroyed. Thousands are without food, water, and shelter. CBF’s field personnel, Jenny Jenkins, is working hand-in-hand with a coalition of local partners, including the Haiti Baptist Convention, to assess and respond appropriately. Funds are essential for the immediate needs of water filtration, food, and shelter for those who survived this disaster as well as for the long-term rebuilding of homes and communities.

School Uniform Report
Classes started last month for Fort Worth ISD students. Broadway is thankful we were able to help students and families get their school year off to a great start by providing uniforms to over 500 students from 250+ families. Each student receives two shirts, two pants, socks, and underwear.

In particular, this year we partnered with Leonard Middle School to provide uniforms for their students and families. We received this note from Sarah Gillaspie, Principal of Leonard Middle School.

“YOU ALL have been an unbelievable blessing to these students. Seriously, they are so proud of their uniforms!  You should have seen them dressed up so nicely.  I want to say that there is no question in our minds that having them dressed up like this had a direct impact on how they see themselves, how they hold themselves throughout the day, and how they behaved.  Your ministry has truly reached into the hearts and homes of well over 100 families here at Leonard. This is an amazing gift to our students!!  God bless you all”

Thanks to Dawn Shepard, Community Center Director, and our amazing team of volunteers for making this year’s school uniform program a great success: Ann Ahearne, Helen Beasley, Gladys Jenson, Judy Kirby, and Ann Packer.

Community Center Needs
Even during the pandemic, we continue to distribute clothes to our neighbors in need through the Adult Clothing Room in our Community Center. At present, there is a great need for new and gently used men’s and women’s tennis shoes and comfortable walking shoes. All sizes are needed. You can drop these off at the Community Center between 9:00 – noon, Monday through Friday. Contact Dawn Shepard to arrange a different drop-off time. If you do not feel comfortable shopping for the shoes at this time, please consider making a financial donation to the Adult Clothing Room or Community Center. Thanks.

MORE THAN ONE WAY
Grants Available for Members in Need
Many members of our congregation are feeling the financial effects of the COVID 19 crisis.  Some have been furloughed from their jobs, some have incurred medical expenses, while others have lost their livelihood altogether.  To assist with the many needs arising from this crisis, funds from the Congregational Care and the pastoral care budgets are being made available for our members.

Each grant amount will be up to $500, depending on the need of the individual or family.  We are asking that members in need of assistance complete a simple grant application form.  Information from the application will be kept in strict confidence.  Our Pastoral staff will review the applications and make the grant assignments.

If you and/or your family could use some help during these uncertain times, please email Fran Patterson for an application.  Also, if you are looking for ways to help during this crisis, please contact Fran.
