All Invited to Coffee & Fellowship in Room 302
Sundays at 9:00 a.m.

Make a plan to stop by the Good Shepherd Room this Sunday morning and meet up with other friends and guests of Broadway before your class starts. Coffee and pastries are served each Sunday starting at 9:00 a.m. in Room 302.

This week our coffee fellowship features delicious homemade pastries from our neighborhood friends at Three Danes as well as regular and decaf coffee from our local Starbucks. Hot tea is also available.

Broadway’s coffee fellowship is a pay-what-you-can coffee house. Everyone is encouraged to do one of three things:

  • pay what you can afford
  • pay what you would normally pay
  • pay it forward, i.e., pay what you normally would, plus a little extra

Stop by Sunday morning to support these great local businesses, enjoy some delicious coffee and pastries, and fellowship with your friends at Broadway.

Worship Sunday, September 19, at 10:50 a.m.
This Sunday we rejoice with Tayana & Defefa Matias as they dedicate their son, Francis. The Chancel Choir will sing “O God, Beyond All Praising,” arranged by Richard Proulx and “Before the Ending of the Day,” by Patrick Vu. Ryon Price will preach a sermon titled “Peace and All Good” from Mark 9:30-37.

COMMUNITY CORNER
August by the Numbers
August was another busy month at our Community Center as we continue to provide essential services to our neighbors and guests.

Here’s a brief report of services provided in August:

  • Sack Lunches: 1,174 lunches distributed
  • Groceries: 168 households served (472 persons)
  • Agape Meal: 328 guests served
  • Adult Clothing Ministry: 123 people served
  • Rental Assistance: $800 in financial assistance provided
  • Diaper Bank: 16 families served

This year, we also distributed school uniforms to over 500 students in the Fort Worth ISD! Each student receives two shirts, two pants, socks, and underwear. Additionally, we have distributed thousands of bottles of water during August and throughout the summer.

Thanks to our great staff and volunteers who make these ministries possible and those who give financially to support these ministries and partnerships.

Volunteers Needed to Assist Afghan Refugees
Broadway will be partnering with World Relief to provide “good neighbor” support teams for two Afghan Refugee families who are resettling in Fort Worth. World Relief is a global Christian humanitarian organization that brings sustainable solutions to the world’s greatest problems – disasters, extreme poverty, violence, oppression, and mass displacement. They partner with local churches and community leaders in the U.S. and abroad to bring hope, healing and transformation to the most vulnerable. Good Neighbor Teams are a six-month commitment to provide support and assistance to refugee families.

Good neighbor teams provide the following types of services and aid to refugee families:

  • Pick up families from the airport
  • Pack welcome kits for families
  • Provide transportation to doctor appointments
  • Provide grocery store orientation
  • Provide public transit orientation
  • Assist with ESL classes
  • Assist with obtaining driver’s license
  • Assist with enrolling children in school

In order to participate, you will need to complete a volunteer application with World Relief. Click this link to apply. When prompted on the application, identify that you are with Broadway Baptist Church and that you are interested in Good Neighbor Teams. This will ensure you get assigned to one of Broadway’s Good Neighbor Teams. World Relief conducts a background check on all volunteer applicants. You will also be required to complete a brief, online orientation.

Broadway Volunteer Training: A training session for Broadway volunteers is scheduled for this Thursday, September 16, at 7:00 p.m. The training session will be led by Karen Morrow, CBF Field Representative who works as an advocate for refugee families who are resettling in our area. The training session will be via Zoom and should last 60-75 minutes. Karen will provide valuable insights on cross-cultural communication and what to expect when assisting refugees. While this training is not required to volunteer, it is strongly recommended.
At this time, we don’t know when refugee families will be assigned to us. Most Afghan Refugees are currently receiving medical assistance and clearance at U.S. military bases. We will let you know as soon as we hear from World Relief and we have been assigned one or both of our families.

Contact Peter Nelson if you are interested in volunteering or attending this Thursday’s training session. The Zoom session will be recorded we will provide a link to the recording for anyone who is unable to attend this Thursday evening.

Community Center Needs
Even during the pandemic, we continue to distribute clothes to our neighbors in need through the Adult Clothing Room in our Community Center. At present, there is a great need for new and gently used men’s and women’s tennis shoes and comfortable walking shoes. All sizes are needed. You can drop these off at the Community Center between 9:00 – noon, Monday through Friday.

Contact Dawn Shepard to arrange a different drop-off time. If you do not feel comfortable shopping for the shoes at this time, please consider making a financial donation to the Adult Clothing Room or Community Center. Thanks.

MORE THAN ONE WAY
Grants Available for Members in Need
Many members of our congregation are feeling the financial effects of the COVID 19 crisis.  Some have been furloughed from their jobs, some have incurred medical expenses, while others have lost their livelihood altogether.  To assist with the many needs arising from this crisis, funds from the Congregational Care and the pastoral care budgets are being made available for our members.

Each grant amount will be up to $500, depending on the need of the individual or family.  We are asking that members in need of assistance complete a simple grant application form.  Information from the application will be kept in strict confidence.  Our Pastoral staff will review the applications and make the grant assignments.

If you and/or your family could use some help during these uncertain times, please email Fran Patterson for an application.  Also, if you are looking for ways to help during this crisis, please contact Fran.
