BROADWAY CELEBRATES

Dedication of Wandala Francis Matias
On Sunday, September 19, we celebrated the dedication service of Wandala Francis Matias. Francis’ parents, Tayana and Defefa, as well as older sisters, Thaynara and Daniela, were a part of this special service of dedicating Francis to God. We are grateful for this young life in our congregation and look forward to walking with him on his faith journey with Jesus.

Broadway Reaches North Texas Giving Day Goal!
A big thank you to all who contributed to Broadway this year as part of North Texas Giving Day. We are blessed to report that we exceeded our goal of $10,000. To date, we have received $12,585! Thanks be to God and to our Broadway family for your faithful support of our Community Ministries and Missions. All money donated will go to our Community Ministries and Missions efforts including the May Street Market, the Agape Meal, and our annual winter coat distribution. There’s still time to give through Thursday, September 30. Visit Broadway’s website and click on the GIVE tab.

Celebrating Dr. Al Travis
On October 10, as part of our Music Emphasis Sunday, Broadway will celebrate the retirement of Dr. Al Travis. For 41 years, Al expressed his faith through music as Organist at Broadway. Al’s retirement became effective in December 2019 shortly before the COVID-19 crisis, which prohibited us from properly recognizing and celebrating his gifts and contribution to our church.

Al was recently interviewed by Dorothy Harwood, Broadway Personnel Committee member. Read the full article here

Al has requested that in lieu of a love offering for him directly that you consider making a donation in his name to our Music Ministries designated fund. These funds go to support the work and ministries that Al helped create here at Broadway including our annual Messiah Sing, the Broadway Series, and guest musicians for Lent, Advent, and other special services as well as the care and maintenance of the pipe organ.

You can make your gift on the church’s website, in the church office, or during the offering Sunday in worship. Envelopes are available from the ushers. Please specify your gift in recognition of Al’s retirement.

THIS WEEK AT BROADWAY

ACT Council Survey to the Congregation
Ends October 6, 2021

The ACT Council is inviting all Broadway congregants ages 14 and up to participate a survey to help understand the educational needs of the congregation around issues of justice and in describing our mission as a church. Your perspective is important and valued. Please take 10-15 minutes to complete this anonymous survey. Survey collection ends on Wednesday, October 6. Results will be shared in coming months.   Broadway ACT Council Survey 2021

New planters and Tree Add Colorful Welcome
Have you noticed the beautiful new planters located at our East entry doors? Join is giving a big Broadway thank you to Tony Roberts and Roseann Harris for providing this bright and colorful welcome addition to our building. Tony also shared his creative talent by crafting this custom tree modeling the Family Ministries logo to greet children and families as they enter. We are blessed by their generosity and talent. Thank you Tony and Roseann!

COMMUNITY CORNER

Volunteers Needed to Assist Afghan Refugees
Broadway will be partnering with World Relief to provide “good neighbor” support teams for two Afghan Refugee families who are resettling in Fort Worth. World Relief is a global Christian humanitarian organization that brings sustainable solutions to the world’s greatest problems – disasters, extreme poverty, violence, oppression, and mass displacement. They partner with local churches and community leaders in the U.S. and abroad to bring hope, healing and transformation to the most vulnerable. Good Neighbor Teams are a six-month commitment to provide support and assistance to refugee families.

Good neighbor teams provide the following types of services and aid to refugee families:

  • Pick up families from the airport
  • Pack welcome kits for families
  • Provide transportation to doctor appointments
  • Provide grocery store orientation
  • Provide public transit orientation
  • Assist with ESL classes
  • Assist with obtaining driver’s license
  • Assist with enrolling children in school

In order to participate, you will need to complete a volunteer application with World Relief. Click this link to apply. When prompted on the application, identify that you are with Broadway Baptist Church and that you are interested in Good Neighbor Teams. This will ensure you get assigned to one of Broadway’s Good Neighbor Teams. World Relief conducts a background check on all volunteer applicants. You will also be required to complete a brief, online orientation.

Please contact Peter Nelson if you are interested in volunteering.

Community Center Needs
Even during the pandemic, we continue to distribute clothes to our neighbors in need through the Adult Clothing Room in our Community Center. At present, there is a great need for new and gently used men’s and women’s tennis shoes and comfortable walking shoes. All sizes are needed. You can drop these off at the Community Center between 9:00 – noon, Monday through Friday.

Contact Dawn Shepard to arrange a different drop-off time. If you do not feel comfortable shopping for the shoes at this time, please consider making a financial donation to the Adult Clothing Room or Community Center. Thanks.

MORE THAN ONE WAY
Grants Available for Members in Need
Many members of our congregation are feeling the financial effects of the COVID 19 crisis.  Some have been furloughed from their jobs, some have incurred medical expenses, while others have lost their livelihood altogether.  To assist with the many needs arising from this crisis, funds from the Congregational Care and the pastoral care budgets are being made available for our members.

Each grant amount will be up to $500, depending on the need of the individual or family.  We are asking that members in need of assistance complete a simple grant application form.  Information from the application will be kept in strict confidence.  Our Pastoral staff will review the applications and make the grant assignments.

If you and/or your family could use some help during these uncertain times, please email Fran Patterson for an application.  Also, if you are looking for ways to help during this crisis, please contact Fran.
