BROADWAY CELEBRATES

New Members Join Broadway
Join us in welcoming new members to Broadway. Sunday, January 16, Ashley Megurdichian and Micah Turner made their decision to become members. We are excited for the unique gifts and experiences each new member brings to our growing congregation. Please join us in welcoming Ashley and Micah to the Broadway family!

MLK Day of Service
Dr. King said: “Everybody can be great because everybody can serve.” Every year on the MLK Holiday, Broadway provides an opportunity for members and friends to serve those in our community.

For this year’s MLK Day of Service, Broadway volunteers packed 500 meals for the workers at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo. The event hires several hundred people annually to work the event. Tarrant Area Food Bank is coordinating with churches and volunteers to provide lunch and dinner each day for these workers for the duration of the event (January 14 – February 5).

Additionally, we had 20 volunteers and families pick up supplies to pack 50 hygiene kits for use at Community Center. Hygiene kits contain essentials like a toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, razors, and bandages. These are distributed to guests at the Community Center and our weekly Agape Meal.

Thanks to all who participated in this year’s MLK Day of Service.

2022-23 Stewardship Pledge Update
Thanks to everyone who has already submitted their pledge card. To date, we’ve received 200 pledges totaling a total pledge amount of $1,337,972. This pledge amount represents 89% of our total pledge goal of $1.5 million.

This is excellent progress towards our budget pledge goal, but we still have work to do. We still need to receive pledges in the amount of $162,028 in order to reach our goal.

If you have not submitted your pledge card yet, there are three ways that you can submit it:

  • Go the GIVE page on the church’s website and complete the online pledge card
  • Place your completed pledge card in the offering plate on Sunday (cards are available in the Centrum)
  • Complete the pledge card you received in the mail and send it back to the church office

Your gift helps Broadway put our “faith and love into action.”

ECUMENICAL SPOTLIGHT

CBF Global Missions: Locally Stationed Minister Karen Morrow Supports Afghan Refugees in Fort Worth

“Thus says the Lord of hosts: Render true judgments, show kindness and mercy to one another; do not oppress the widow, the orphan, the sojourner, or the poor; and do not devise evil in your hearts against one another.”  Zechariah 7:9-10

“Sojourners” in the Bible referred to those who were temporarily or permanently living somewhere that was not their home, and where the relationships they formed in the new community determined their survival. From October to December 2021, seven hundred and twenty-two families sojourned to Fort Worth, mostly from Afghanistan, evacuating their homes in desperation and seeking a place of safety for themselves and their children. Widespread news coverage documented some of the traumatic situations these families encountered.

Broadway’s denominational partner, the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, has placed Karen Morrow here in Fort Worth to facilitate resettlement efforts for sojourners to our community. Through partnerships with World Relief, Catholic Charities, and numerous local churches including Broadway, Karen works to help these families build relationships in their new community as well as meet the day-to-day needs of starting from scratch in a new place. She knows that they have lost not only their homes and material possessions, but also the extended family, friends and networking opportunities that we all rely upon for our social-emotional well-being and ability to thrive. Additionally, while many of the men speak English fluently, most of the women and children are new to learning English which creates additional barriers that they must overcome. Karen’s essential ministry with these evacuees shows God’s loving kindness and mercy to those who depend upon the kindness of strangers to ensure the well-being of their loved ones and children.

Members of Broadway may offer support through a number of ways:

  • Giving generously to the CBF Offering for Global Missions which funds Karen’s ministry

  • Volunteering one afternoon hour each week in the Ready for School family literacy program, a 20-week program which helps preschool children become prepared to enter FWISD’s Pre-K and creates friendship and learning opportunities for their caregivers

  • Supporting the two families Broadway has committed to befriend and partner with as they transition their home to Fort Worth

  • Providing transportation to the grocery store, doctor’s appointments and other errands

  • Donating furniture or other household set-up items

  • Helping with ESL classes and lessons

  • Becoming community for these new neighbors to help them thrive in their new home

  • Praying for those in our community, and around the world, who are sojourners and in need of a loving community of neighbors and friends.

MORE THAN ONE WAY
Grants Available for Members in Need
Many members of our congregation are feeling the financial effects of the COVID 19 crisis.  Some have been furloughed from their jobs, some have incurred medical expenses, while others have lost their livelihood altogether.  To assist with the many needs arising from this crisis, funds from the Congregational Care and the pastoral care budgets are being made available for our members.

Each grant amount will be up to $500, depending on the need of the individual or family.  We are asking that members in need of assistance complete a simple grant application form.  Information from the application will be kept in strict confidence.  Our Pastoral staff will review the applications and make the grant assignments.

If you and/or your family could use some help during these uncertain times, please email Fran Patterson for an application.  Also, if you are looking for ways to help during this crisis, please contact Fran.
