BROADWAY ACTS

Black History Month Spotlight
During Black History Month, the ACT Council Education work group will spotlight a person, issue, challenge, or cause that relates to its stated mission. This week we celebrate Maya Angelou.

Maya Angelou

In 1928 St. Louis, Missouri gifted the world acclaimed poet, storyteller, activist, and autobiographer Maya Angelou- born Marguerite Johnson. Angelou attained a broad career as a singer, dancer, actress, composer, and Hollywood’s first female black director. However, she became most famous as a writer, editor, essayist, playwright, and poet. As a civil rights activist, Angelou worked with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. She also worked as an educator and served as the Reynolds professor of American Studies at Wake Forest University. By 1975, wrote Carol E. Neubauer in Southern Women Writers: The New Generation, Angelou “was recognized as a spokesperson for … all people who are committed to raising the moral standards of living in the United States.” She served on two presidential committees: one with Gerald Ford in 1975 and another with Jimmy Carter in 1977. In 2000, President Bill Clinton awarded Angelou the National Medal of Arts. In 2010, President Barack Obama awarded Angelou the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the U.S. Angelou received over 50 honorary degrees before her passing.

Words are Things

“Words are things. You must be careful, careful about calling people out of their names, using racial pejoratives and sexual pejoratives and all that ignorance. Don’t do that. Some day we’ll be able to measure the power of words. I think they are things. They get on the walls. They get in your wallpaper. They get in your rugs, in your upholstery, and your clothes, and finally in to you.”   -Maya Angelou

Meet ACT Justice Committee Member Harriet Harral

Last month began a series of introductory articles on members of the Justice Committee – helping answer the question of who are the people serving on this committee and why do they want to do this work?  Included in each article is the Justice committee’s mission statement:
The Justice Committee exists to encourage and empower the Church’s role in the making of a more just, equitable, and peaceful community and world. The Committee works to represent and engage the congregation and community in various justice-related matters, including those related to fair pay, housing, immigration, public safety, antiracism, and equal, civil, and human rights, etc. In concert with the Senior Pastor and/or the Chair of the Board of Deacons, the Justice Committee is authorized to issue public statements and recommend statements and actions to the members.

An important piece of this committee’s work is extending an invitation to you, to the whole congregation, to join them in their efforts to contribute to a more just world.

This week you will meet Harriet Harral, who sat down with Katherine Godby for an interview. Get to know Harriet and learn more about why she found it important to serve on this committee. Read the full article HERE

CAMP BROADWAY

Firewood For Sale!
Just in time for the winter weather, Camp Broadway is having a Firewood Sale.  We have plenty of wood for everyone’s fireplaces or firepits, all you need to do is come and get it!

Funds from our sale will help us purchase materials and install a new electric entry gate and entry fencing at Camp Broadway. The addition of the new gate and fencing will help us in several ways…a nicer “first impression” when people drive by or come for a tour; easier access for guests, especially at night or during inclement weather; and better security for all.

We are selling 1/8 of a cord of wood for $35 and ½ of a cord of wood for $100.  You can pick out the pieces you want and then load them in your car.

A very generous offer has been made by Matt Ferguson:  if you would like wood delivered to your home, Matt will deliver and stack it for you.  The price for this service is $70 for a 1/8th of a cord and $200 for a half cord.  All money goes to the Camp Broadway gate fund.

Full disclosure:  The camp is experiencing Oak Wilt disease and Emerald Ash Bore.  Camp Director, Fran Patterson, has been working with the Texas A&M Forestry Department for advisement. They give the ok to sell because all of the wood to be sold has been cured for at least one year, so the threat of spreading either Oak Wilt or Emerald Ash Bore is not a problem.  We do ask that the wood be kept within Tarrant County.

Call, text, or email Fran at 817 845-8876 or fpatterson@broadwaybc.org to arrange a pickup or delivery time. Thank you for your continued support of Camp Broadway!

COMMUNITY CORNER

Community Center Volunteer Opportunities
Here are two opportunities to volunteer with our Community Ministries.

We need volunteers to make sandwiches for our sack lunch ministry the weeks of February 27, March 6, and March 13. For more information and to volunteer, contact Dawn Shepard at 817-336-5761, ext. 8239.

Broadway is providing support to two Afghan families who have resettled to Fort Worth. We currently need the following items:

•    Two (2) sewing machines
•    Pressure cooker
•    Vacuum cleaner

Items should be in good working order. If you have any of these items to donate or would like to volunteer to support our Afghan families, contact Peter Nelson.

Cloud Covered Streets at Broadway
Broadway will again welcome Cloud Covered Streets to the Community Center this Friday, February 25. This faith-based ministry provides showers, laundry facilities, and haircuts to those in need. On their last visit, they served over 30 guests. We are so thankful to offer these services to our guests and neighbors.

Cloud Covered Streets will be at Broadway’s Community Center on alternating Fridays from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Volunteers are needed to help, especially those who are qualified to cut hair. Click here to volunteer.

Here is a list of upcoming dates at Broadway:

MORE THAN ONE WAY
Grants Available for Members in Need
Many members of our congregation are feeling the financial effects of the COVID 19 crisis.  Some have been furloughed from their jobs, some have incurred medical expenses, while others have lost their livelihood altogether.  To assist with the many needs arising from this crisis, funds from the Congregational Care and the pastoral care budgets are being made available for our members.

Each grant amount will be up to $500, depending on the need of the individual or family.  We are asking that members in need of assistance complete a simple grant application form.  Information from the application will be kept in strict confidence.  Our Pastoral staff will review the applications and make the grant assignments.

If you and/or your family could use some help during these uncertain times, please email Fran Patterson for an application.  Also, if you are looking for ways to help during this crisis, please contact Fran.
