BROADWAY CELEBRATES

Youth Mission Camp
The youth enjoyed a great spring break missions retreat March 12-14!  Along with completing several mission projects around Camp Broadway, they also journeyed through a prayer pilgrimage to bring peace—specifically to Ukraine.

Marina Dichenko, a professional violinist, came to speak to the youth about how she moved to America from Ukraine where her family still resides in Kharkiv.  After a discussion with the youth about the atrocities in Ukraine, Marina and Emily played Ralph Vaughan Williams’ ethereal piece, “The Lark Ascending”. Then Chapel Choir sang “Siyahamba” a cappella for Marina! “We are marching in the light of God!”

The retreat concluded with making beautiful prayer beads with our own beloved Camilla Bloom and Claudine Marion. Many thanks to all the adults who volunteered their time to lead our youth!

Family Ministry BBQ with New Friends
Several of our families hosted a picnic Sunday evening, March 20, extending some big Broadway hospitality to new friends from Afghanistan. The group enjoyed beautiful Camp Broadway, great weather, and time together getting to know one another.

Help Us Reach Our Contribution Goal!
The 2021-22 fiscal year for Broadway is coming to a close on March 31. We have been blessed by your faithful giving to support the mission and ministries of Broadway.

We have an opportunity to finish the fiscal year in excellent financial position with zero on our line of credit with the bank. We ended February about $45,000 behind our contributions goal for the year. If you have already completed your pledge for 2021-22, we say thank you for your generosity and faithfulness. If you have not completed your pledge for the 2021-22 budget year, now is a great time to get caught up and help us meet our goal. You can make your contributions on the GIVE page on our website, mail a check to the church office, or place your contribution in the offering plate on Sunday.

March Women’s History Spotlight: Fanny J. Cosby
by Tiffany McClain, Music and Worship Coordinator

“Oh, what a happy soul I am,
Although I cannot see!
I am resolved in this world
Contented I will be.”
—Fanny J. Crosby, age 8, after being told there was no cure for her blindness

Since March is Women’s History Month, we have planned a hymn sing featuring the hymns of Fanny J. Crosby. The hymn sing will be our Vespers service at Camp Broadway this Sunday evening at 6:00 p.m.  Fran Patterson will kick us out of the camp at some point Sunday evening, so we will not sing all the nearly 9,000 hymns that she wrote, but we will sing some of her more popular hymns, the first one that she composed, and her favorite hymn.

You may know Fanny J. Crosby’s name as the author of hymns such as “Blessed Assurance,” “Redeemed, How I Love to Proclaim It,” and “Rescue the Perishing,” but she is much more than that. The more I read about Fanny Crosby, the more I realize that I knew very little about this remarkable woman.

Fanny J. Crosby was born on March 24, 1880, and became blind at the age of six weeks due to a harsh treatment for an eye infection by a visiting doctor. Her father passed away when she was six months old, so during childhood she was reared by her mother and maternal grandmother. These strong women in her life gave her a good foundation of who she was to become.

While a student, and later an educator, at the New York Institute for the Blind, she penned over 1,000 secular poems and songs, four books, and co-wrote many political and patriotic songs.

Her life at the institute would span seven years as a student and eleven years as a teacher. Institute life presented her many prestigious acquaintances along with numerous firsts as a woman and a blind person in the nineteenth century, such as an invitation to speak and perform at Congress.1

In 1864 William B. Bradbury encouraged her to write Sunday School hymns. She wrote “We Are Going,” which was sung at Bradbury’s funeral four years later. She never wrote another secular song and was able to support herself with her hymn writing.

While Fanny J. Crosby is known for her hymn writing, she was also a city mission worker. She stated, “From the time I received my first check for my poems, I made up my mind to open my hand wide to those who needed assistance.” At the age of 60, she “made a new commitment to Christ to serve the poor” and lived a life of poverty for the next three decades. Once her health began to fail, she lived with a relative and passed away just shy of her 95th birthday.

May we learn from her devotion, take what Fanny J. Cosby taught us, and move forward for our daughters to carry on.

Join us Sunday evening at Camp Broadway to sing some of her hymns and to learn more about this powerful woman of God.

COMMUNITY CORNER

Broadway Supports Ukraine Relief Efforts
Broadway has contributed over $17,600 to the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship’s relief efforts in the Ukraine. Part of this came from the church’s Disaster Relief funds and part of it came from the offering that was collected at our churchwide luncheon on Sunday, March 6.

Thank you for your generosity. Contributions continue to come in and there is still time for you to participate. You can donate on the GIVE page on Broadway’s website or give directly to CBF on their website.

All money collected will be given to the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship’s relief efforts directed primarily to the Village of Hope ministry in Kyiv. This foster family ministry serving street children was recently bombed by the Russian military last week. Fortunately no one was on the property at the time of the attack and most of those served by Village of Hope are now out of Kyiv. Please pray for those who have fled their homes to seek safety in the midst of war. Click here to the read a recent article from Baptist News Global on this event.

We give thanks for these wonderful gifts and ways that we can help our sisters and brothers in Ukraine. Click here for a prayer you can use each day to pray for peace in Ukraine.

Agape Meal Time Change
With the start of Daylight Savings Time, we have moved the time for our Thursday Agape Meal. Dinner is served from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. in the church Courtyard. Everyone is welcome.

For more information about our Agape Meal or to volunteer, contact Peter Nelson for more information.

Cloud Covered Streets at Broadway
Broadway is pleased to welcome Cloud Covered Streets to the Community Center. This is a faith-based ministry that provides showers, laundry facilities, and haircuts to those in need. On their last visit, Cloud Covered Streets had 34 guests use their services—25 used the shower facilities, 12 used the laundry services, and 14 guests got haircuts. We are so thankful to offer these services to our guests and neighbors.

Cloud Covered Streets will be at Broadway’s Community Center on alternating Fridays from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Volunteers are needed to help, especially those who are qualified to cut hair. Click here to volunteer.
