Broadway seeks to be a beacon of God’s joy and justice, Christ’s hope and reconciliation, and the Holy Spirit’s courage and healing love.

We are working to create a church and world where all people are welcome and belong in the beloved community of God. Through the ministries of worship, education, compassion and advocacy, Broadway provides a place of grace, beauty, sanctuary, inclusivity, and brave faith.

Family Camp
Broadway families of children in grades 1 – 3 had a wonderful time at Family Camp this past weekend at Camp Broadway. This year’s theme is “Seek Peace & Pursue It”. The children memorized the verse where Jesus says, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” from Matthew 5:9. They learned about how to practice peace through Bible stories, and the peace work being done with our partners at Fellowship Southwest along the border. Families worked on mission projects for our friends at the border, and enjoyed craft time and having fun and fellowship together.

The “Inn” Crowd
Last week Broadway concluded our summer session of Room in the Inn. During July and August, we hosted ten men each Monday night as part of this program, which provides dinner, overnight accommodations, and breakfast the next morning. This is such an important ministry, especially recently when outside temperatures have been over 100 degrees.
 
We give thanks to the many volunteers who helped host our guests and provide Broadway’s extravagant hospitality. These groups include:

• Journey Inward, Journey Outward Group
• Missions Committee
• Ragamuffins Class
• Sojourners Class

 
Special thanks to our kitchen hosts: Helen Beasley, Judy Kirby, and Suzanne Hooper. Each week during this summer session they assisted our volunteers in serving our guests. We also couldn’t do this ministry without our Innkeepers, who stay overnight with our guests. Thanks for sacrificing a good night’s sleep to care for our neighbors.
 
Room in the Inn will take a break over the next several months but will return in January and February when we will once again host on Monday nights. For more information about Room in the Inn at Broadway, contact Josh Lucas.

Agape Meal, Tonight at 6:00 p.m. in Fellowship Hall
Broadway’s weekly Agape Meal is an opportunity to serve in fellowship with our neighbors. Broadway volunteers are always needed, and this is a wonderful way for friends and family to serve together.  

Volunteer Orientation and training for new volunteers is provided prior to the Agape Meal between 5:30 and 5:45 p.m. in Fellowship Hall. Meal service begins at 6:00 p.m. with a worship service from 6:30 to 7:00 p.m. There are several ways to volunteer: set up tables, serve meals, host tables, and clean up. Email Josh Lucas with questions.

Coffee Fellowship Sunday at 9:00 a.m. in 302
Join us for coffee and fellowship this Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m. in room 302. Enjoy fresh locally made pastries from Three Danes Bakery as well as hot tea and coffee from Cherry Coffee Shop of Fort Worth.  

Worship Sunday September 8 at 10:50 a.m.
This Sunday in worship, Broadway’s Pastor of Family Ministries, Jennifer Baergen Davis, will preach from Mark 7:24-37. Senior Pastor Ryon Price will lead the Children’s Sermon. The Chancel Choir will sing “But by Love” by Dan Forrest.

City of Fort Worth Street Improvements Underway 
Fort Worth’s Transportation and Public Works Department has begun the next round of needed street improvements in identified areas of the Near Southside. Street improvements will include replacing water and sewer lines in some cases, as well as new gutters and curbs where necessary as well as repaving. Included in the streets scheduled for construction that will impact Broadway’s campus are:

• W. Peter Smith St. from S. Jennings Ave. to Galveston Ave. 
• May Street from W. Peter Smith Street to W. Broadway Ave.

Work on Peter Smith has begun this week and May Street is scheduled to begin in October. The City is utilizing a contractor for the project and they are coordinating with organizations that are affected by the construction. They will do everything they can to minimize the impact, including trying to keep at least one lane open as much as possible. Regardless, all of our parking lots will be accessible from W. Broadway Ave.
 
More information will be provided regarding the street improvement project in the coming weeks.   

Action Opportunity for Bible Freedom and Religious Freedom
Tuesday, September 10 in Austin, TX 
One of our Baptist distinctives is Bible Freedom, the ability and responsibility for each believer to study and interpret the Bible. At Broadway, we also follow the Baptist distinctive of Religious Freedom, knowing that for faith to be authentic, it must be free from government control. We are excited to partner with our friends at Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty, Christians Against Christian Nationalism, Texas Impact and many more groups in opposing a proposed curriculum from the Texas Education Agency that would infuse K-5 reading and language arts curriculum with Bible stories.

On September 10, the State Board of Education will be taking public testimony about this curriculum, and those who don’t want to turn Texas public schools into Sunday schools need to show up to voice our concerns. If you are interested in joining a bus to Austin on September 10 from Broadway, please fill out this form today or email operations@BJConline.org to let them know you want to join! Planned departure time is 5:30 a.m. BJC and others will be reserving transportation but need to know interest to be sure to book the bus.

Contribution Statements
Last week, you should have received your mid-year Contribution Statement, which will show contributions to Broadway from January through July.
 
Statements were sent via email. Be sure to check your email and notify Kathy Madeja if you do not receive your statement or if the information on your statement is incorrect. Members and friends who do not have an email on file will receive a printed copy of their statement in the mail.

Parents Night Out!
Friday, September 6 from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. 

Family Ministry’s upcoming Parents’ Night Out is Friday, September 6. It is for infants through Grade 6 and is from 6:00 to 10:00 pm. Children should have their meal before or send dinner with them. Snacks, drinks and dessert will be provided. The cost is $30 for the first child and $7 for each additional sibling with a family maximum of $51.

Deacon Board Meeting

Rest & Renew Wednesday Evenings 
Starting September 18 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Fleming Chapel 
Join us each week as we take part in contemplative prayers and spiritual practices in a quiet, reflective setting, making time to rest in God’s presence and renew our calling to “be love.”  
 
Dates: Wednesdays, Sept 18-Nov. 6 (eight weeks)
Time: 6:30-7:30 pm
Location: Fleming Chapel
 
Part 1  6:30-7:00 – Group contemplative prayer – Experience quiet space for guided prayer, reflective scripture reading, and intercession.
Part 2  7:00-7:30 – Engage spiritual practices – Explore various spiritual practices such as praying through silence, art, and journaling.

Annual Church Business Meeting and Fellowship Luncheon
Sunday, September 22 After Worship in Fellowship  Hall
Our annual church business meeting is scheduled for Sunday, September 22. An important agenda item for member review now is the proposed revisions to the bylaws recommended by the ACT Council in collaboration with the ACT Council/Deacons Bylaws Task Force. These bylaws changes were unanimously recommended by the ACT Council and then approved by unanimous vote by the Board of Deacons on July 22,2024. They now require a congregational vote for final decision. An informational meeting will be offered next week on Wednesday, September 11 at 6:30 p.m. via Zoom for members to ask questions about the proposed changes. As per our bylaws, a quorum of 100 members is required to conduct the business of the church. Mark your calendars and please make every effort to attend! The meeting will be held in Fellowship Hall immediately following worship with a free lunch for everyone attending. Contact deacons@broadwaybc.org with questions. 

Dedication Service of John Thomas Memorial Portrait
Saturday, September 28 at 10:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary 
Broadway Baptist Church invites you to a very special dedication service on Saturday, September 28 at 10:00 a.m. A commemorative portrait of Mr. John Thomas was commissioned by our church as an act of reparation for the racial discrimination he experienced during his career at Broadway. The portrait is painted by internationally recognized artist Sedrick Huckaby, and will be dedicated at this service with a reception to follow. An Old Fashioned Gospel Sing and Ice Cream Social
Sunday, September 15 at 6:00 p.m.
Save the date for this special evening of singing along to familiar and beloved hymns featuring beloved classics such as “In the Garden”, “Just a Closer Walk with Thee”, “I Saw the Light”, “When We All Get to Heaven”, and many more. The choir will sing Dr. Al Travis’s setting of “Shall We Gather At the River”, an energetic “Unclouded Day”, and “Total Praise”, a powerful anthem made famous by the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. The event begins with a prelude of piano and organ duets 5:45 p.m.

We are thrilled to welcome back to Broadway our friend and pianist, Scott Ayers. Chris Crook will return to direct the Chancel Choir, and Bradley Reznicek on organ. This is going to be an evening to remember! 

Ice Cream Social: Following the Gospel Sing there will be a time of fellowship and ice cream in Fellowship Hall! We would love for you to participate by bringing your favorite ice cream or toppings. Click here to let Tiffany McClain know what you will bring.

Fellowship Southwest Compassion & Justice Conference September 20-21 in Dallas, TX. 
The Compassion & Justice Conference will bring together people and organizations from different backgrounds to worship, grow, pray, and take action.

As a non-traditional network of Christians, Fellowship Southwest acknowledges that compassion and justice work are complementary and equally essential in serving vulnerable communities. FSW connects people of faith, passionate about compassion and justice, to challenge, inspire, and empower them to be and do better together for our communities and those we serve.

August by the Numbers
August was one of the busiest months ever at our Community Center.
 
Here’s a brief report of services provided in August:

• Sack Lunches: 1,820 lunches distributed
• Groceries: 431 households served (1559 persons)
• Agape Meal: 610 meals served (over five dates)
• Room in the Inn: 40 men served (over four dates)
• Adult Clothing Ministry: 166 people served
• Rental and Utilities Assistance: $210 in financial assistance provided
• Diaper Bank: 58 children and adults served
• Volunteer Hours: 465 hours from 131 volunteers

These services are in addition to our annual school uniform distribution, where we provided uniforms to 530 FWISD students.
 
Demand for these essential services continues to increase. We give thanks for our wonderful staff and volunteers who make these services possible and for those who contribute financially to support the ministries and mission of Broadway. 

May Street Market
The May Street Market needs your help! Over the last two months, the Market has served a historic number of families. We continue to be met with shortages at the food bank, and we are unable to keep our shelves fully stocked. We rely on support from the congregation each week to provide pantry staples and non-perishable items. In fact, this week we sent out a call for help, and you answered generously! We received donations totaling over 300 lbs. last Sunday!

Thank you to all who continue to support the May Street Market and Community Center through faithful giving, volunteering, or donations in kind. It takes all of us to feed, clothe, and care for our neighbors.

Member Death

Beloved Broadway member Earl Martin passed away on Friday, August 23. A memorial service will be held Monday, September 23 at 11:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary with a reception to follow. CBF shared a tribute article to Earl who was an emeritus field personnel and missionary for 32 years. Read the article here.
