About

 WELCOME TO BROADWAY BAPTIST CHURCH

Rooted in the Near Southside of Fort Worth for more than 140 years, Broadway is a vibrant and diverse community of faith. Born of the Baptist tradition, Broadway includes persons from many different backgrounds and perspectives, but united in the love and grace of Jesus Christ.

Our Vision and Mission

Broadway seeks to be a beacon of God’s joy and justice, Christ’s hope and reconciliation, and the Holy Spirit’s courage and healing love.

We are working to create a church and world where all people are welcome and belong in the beloved community of God. Through the ministries of worship, education, compassion and advocacy, Broadway provides a place of grace, beauty, sanctuary, inclusivity, and brave faith.

At Broadway, we blend traditional worship with an unconventional and courageous spirit, welcoming everyone into a sanctuary of grace, beauty, and bold inspiration.

Originally called Southside Baptist Church, Broadway was established in 1882 at its current site between South Main and Jennings Streets. Over the generations the church grew from a simple, clapboard building to the signature neo-gothic building which is an icon in the re-emerging Near Southside neighborhood today.

Well known for its long-standing commitment to meeting the social needs of the community, Broadway believes the ministry of Jesus brings goods news to the soul and also the body as well as the City. In 1963, the Baptist Center (now known as the Gene Thompson Community Center ) opened with ministries to neighborhood residents, offering food and clothing for adults and children. The Agape Meal was launched in 1995 to provide worship and fellowship at a weekly, family-style meal for homeless residents, church members, and community volunteers.  In recent years, Broadway has expanded its social ministry partnerships by providing meeting space to various faith-based and community service organizations, social justice programs, and schools for students with special needs.

In 1996, the sanctuary was renovated and one of the finest pipe organs in the world was installed: the Rildia Bee O’Bryan Cliburn Organ, named for the mother of Fort Worth legend and former Broadway member Van Cliburn. With more than 10,000 pipes, it is the largest pipe organ in Texas, amazing in both sound and stature, a fixture in Sunday services at Broadway and a gift we enjoy sharing with the community through many concerts and special services.

Today, Broadway continues to be fully committed to the people of Fort Worth, providing uplifting worship to God, spiritual and physical sustenance, and sanctuary to all. Broadway is committed to the inclusion of all people and equality of all members – including the inclusion and full equality of women, people of color, and LGBTQIA persons in all facets of congregational life – including leadership.  As the Scripture says, “There is neither Jew nor Greek, neither slave nor free, neither male nor female; for all are one in Christ Jesus.”

Broadway is indeed a place of sanctuary for all.  And it is a place where we seek to inspire the discovery of sanctuary in all. This is at the heart of what we believe about the reconciling Gospel of God’s Spirit in Christ in all of us.  And it is our message for our community and world.
