Statement on Voting Rights
The right to vote is fundamental to democracy; therefore, the Justice Committee at Broadway Baptist Church is committed to the conviction that every voice matters, not just in our faith community, but also in our city and state. We therefore urge the members of the Texas Legislature to assess their votes on all bills impacting voting by the high standard of justice found in Scripture: are the least among us being served well – or at least not being negatively impacted? Are we doing unto others what we would want them to do to us?
As Baptists, we believe in the priesthood of the believer, which demands our commitment to uphold individual freedoms and privileges, including those described in the founding documents of our country. As members of Broadway Baptist Church in Fort Worth, we are concerned about the marginalized members of our fellowship and our community, people of color, the disabled, and the elderly, whose ability to vote will be negatively impacted by the pending legislation HB6 and SB7. We strive to uphold the teachings found in our scriptures that encourage us to love our neighbors extravagantly and generously and to support their full and equal participation in the rights and responsibility of voting.
