BROADWAY CELEBRATES
MLK Jr. Day of Service
Families and friends participated in our socially distanced MLK, Jr. Day of Service this past Monday as they dropped off blessing bags and hygiene kits for our Community Center that were previously assembled at their home. Others dropped off sack lunch supplies and everyone was given a small “thank you” gift for participating. We are grateful for this loving service in memory of Dr. King.
THIS WEEK AT BROADWAY
Worship Sunday
January 24, 10:50 a.m.

This Sunday, Pastor Jennifer Davis will lead a Children’s Sermon. Ellie and Jonathan Hatley will sing the hymns and Jane Andrews will be the organist. The previously recorded anthem is “Rock of Ages” by Michael Cox. Senior Pastor Ryon Price will preach on Mark 1:14-20.

Broadway Creates the ACT Council
Following the murder of George Floyd in May 2020, Senior Pastor Ryon Price wrote a letter urging Broadway to ACT: Acknowledge, Confess, Transform.  The letter called on Broadway to respond to the urgent issues of racial injustice, the failure to affirm LGBTQ persons, and the failure to welcome people of all denominations.   The letter addressed the role of the church in these matters.  It was presented to the Broadway Board of Deacons in September 2020.  A robust discussion, and endorsement of the tenets of the letter at the October 11, 2020 Deacon Board meeting resulted in the formation of a Deacon ACT committee to provide structure for moving forward.    At its November 16, 2020 meeting, following the report of the Deacon ACT committee, the Board of Deacons approved a recommendation to form an ACT Council and submit it to the congregation at the quarterly business meeting.  On December 16, 2020, the congregation approved a recommendation, establishing an ACT Council that will remain in place for three years while carrying out its charge to address the recommendations proposed by the Deacon ACT committee.  Chief among those proposals is the establishment of a standing Justice Committee that will proactively address matters of inclusion, diversity, and equity.
Broadway’s Committee on Committees immediately staffed the Council with nineteen persons to expedite work on these urgent issues.  In response to the assault on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, the ACT Council issued a public statement.

The Committee on Committees is seeking self-nominations to expand the membership of the Council.  Those who are interested in participating in this important work should submit their self-nomination by January 31, 2021.

COMMUNITY CORNER
Community Center Donations
We are collecting items that are used frequently in our sack lunches and our Agape Meals. Last month, Broadway distributed 1,166 sack lunches and 300 Agape Meals to our homeless friends and neighbors. We need the following items:
•    Small bags of chips
•    Granola bars
•    Peanut butter crackers
•    Small pre-packaged desserts
•    Bottled water
•    Canned or bottled sodas
All items should be pre-packaged and ready for safe distribution to individuals. Contact Dawn Shepard to arrange a time to drop off your donation at the Community Center.
MORE THAN ONE WAY
Grants Available for Members in Need
Many members of our congregation are feeling the financial effects of the COVID 19 crisis.  Some have been furloughed from their jobs, some have incurred medical expenses, while others have lost their livelihood altogether.  In an attempt to assist with the many needs arising from this crisis, funds from the Congregational Care and the pastoral care budgets are being made available for our members.

Each grant amount will be up to $500, depending on the need of the individual or family.  We are asking that members in need of assistance complete a simple grant application form.  Information from the application will be kept in strict confidence.  Our Pastoral staff will review the applications and make the grant assignments.

If you and/or your family could use some help during these uncertain times, please email Fran Patterson for an application.  Also, if you are looking for ways to help during this crisis, please contact Fran.
