Courageous Conversation: The Threat of White Christian Nationalism
Thursday, February 11 at 6PM

Next Thursday, February 11, Pastor Ryon Price will welcome special guest Amanda Tyler, Executive Director of BJC. Amanda and her team visited Broadway in November of 2019 and held an advocacy training session for the community on the topic of Christian Nationalism. As this threat continues to grow and capture national attention, we welcome Amanda back to continue the conversation.  This Courageous Conversation will be held via Zoom webinar and will include time for participant Q&A. Please register to attend HERE

If you are unfamiliar with this issue or would like to learn more, consider viewing one of the podcasts in the BJC series which covers the historical and ongoing intersection between White Supremacy and American Christianity. Click HERE to to view their site.

Lenten Devotional Writers Needed
Would you consider writing a meditation for our 2021 Lenten Devotional? The Worship Committee is looking for writers for our Lenten Daily Devotionals. We always enjoy hearing from previous writers, but we also look forward to hearing from new participants. The devotionals will begin Ash Wednesday, February 17th and we need 40 writers to continue this tradition of reflection. If you are interested, email Tiffany McClain.

COMMUNITY CORNER
January by the Numbers
2021 is off to a fast start. January was another busy month at Broadway’s Community Center. Need for essential services in our neighborhood and community continues to remain high, especially during the COVID-19 crisis.

Here’s a report of services provided in January.

  • Sack Lunches: 1,197 lunches distributed
  • Groceries: 276 households served (700 persons)
  • Agape Meal: 311 guests served
  • Samaritan House Meals: 585 meals delivered
  • Adult Clothing Ministry: 84 people served
  • Rental Assistance: $1,200 in financial assistance provided

Thanks to our great staff and volunteers who make these ministries possible and those who give financially to support these ministries and partnerships.

Blessings Bags Available
Thanks to the Broadway Youth who made Blessings Bags as part of our recent MLK Day of Service. Blessings Bags contain bottled water, non-perishable food items, face masks, and hand sanitizer. They also contain an information card that lists the days and times for services through Broadway’s Community Center.

A great idea is to keep these bags in your vehicle so you can quickly and easily share them with those in need. We encourage you to add a personal note of encouragement, prayer, or Bible verse to each bag. If you need Blessings Bags for your vehicle(s), stop by the Community Center to pick them up between 9:00 a.m. – noon, Monday through Friday. Contact Dawn Shepard if you need to arrange a different time to pick up your Blessings Bags.

Broadway Blessings Secures Bibles and New Testaments
Thanks to a recent gift through Broadway Blessings, we purchased English-and Spanish-language Bibles and New Testaments. We are distributing these to guests at our weekly Agape Meal as well as sharing them with the residents at Samaritan House as part of their weekly meals. We also have them available for any of our guests at the Community Center. We give thanks to God for this generous gift and the ability to share the good news with our neighbors.

MORE THAN ONE WAY
Grants Available for Members in Need
Many members of our congregation are feeling the financial effects of the COVID 19 crisis.  Some have been furloughed from their jobs, some have incurred medical expenses, while others have lost their livelihood altogether.  In an attempt to assist with the many needs arising from this crisis, funds from the Congregational Care and the pastoral care budgets are being made available for our members.

Each grant amount will be up to $500, depending on the need of the individual or family.  We are asking that members in need of assistance complete a simple grant application form.  Information from the application will be kept in strict confidence.  Our Pastoral staff will review the applications and make the grant assignments.

If you and/or your family could use some help during these uncertain times, please email Fran Patterson for an application.  Also, if you are looking for ways to help during this crisis, please contact Fran.
