Baptist News Global“Baptist News Global interprets Christianity and culture through compelling journalism that informs and motivates people to make a difference in the world. It does this from a perspective that is Baptist in heritage and ecumenical in spirit.” Baptists have long had a commitment to the 1 st Amendment to the United States Constitution. Last month the Ecumenical Spotlight highlighted the Baptist Joint Committee on Religious Liberty. This month we focus on our commitment to a free press, specifically one that independently provides news, opinion and analysis on matters of faith. Baptist News Global (BNG) was established in 1990 and is passionately committed to a free and faithful press. It is a non-profit, reader-supported organization and provides, at no cost to readers, a number of services including:
- Daily News Feed: Sent every business day with headlines and links to the latest news and opinion articles.
- Friday Roundup.: Sent each Friday with a brief letter from the Editor Mark Wingfield walking you through the news of the week.
- Trending – Sent every Saturday morning with headlines and links to trending articles at baptistnews.com.
- Breaking News – Sent periodically (typically once or twice a quarter) to alert readers to breaking news or developing stories of national interest.
The tagline for BNG, “Conversations That Matter,” leads BNG to host webinars and events that bring together experts to address significant matters from a faith perspective. The most recent one featured international religion expert Knox Thames discussing global religious persecution, the state of human rights, why American Christians should care about these things, and observations on what could or should happen in 2021. At these webinars, participants are able to ask questions in real time. Other recent webinars have presented Mark Galli, former editor of Christianity Today, and a panel of counselors and worship leaders to explore how to cope with pandemic holidays. Broadway includes BNG in its Cooperative Funding budget because of the significant service it provides to all people of faith and particularly because of the resource it is for our members. For instance:
- Sunday School classes have based studies on series such as “Truth Decay” by David Gushee (Distinguished University Professor of Christian Ethics and Director of the Center for Theology and Public Life at Mercer University), and a five-article series on Bonhoeffer Moments by Bill Leonard (Founding Dean and James and Marilyn Dunn Professor of Baptist Studies and Church History at Wake Forest University School of Divinity).
- Articles on social justice will be informative for the ACT Council and the new Justice Committee.
- Explorations on how to worship during a pandemic can provide ideas and support for worship leaders.
- Information on issues of faith around the world benefits each one of us.
Many of you reading this will remember that the immediate former editor of BNG was David Wilkinson, the Minister of Education and Discipleship at Broadway from 2003-2007. The current editor and publisher is Mark Wingfield who served as associate pastor of one of our sister churches, Wilshire Baptist Church in Dallas, for 17 years. Harriet Harral serves on the BNG Board of Directors. We encourage you to subscribe to BNG’s services. There is no cost to subscribe.
