BROADWAY CELEBRATES

LOL Variety Show and Auction
The Broadway Youth put on a fantastic show this past Sunday, May 15. Their hard work was evident in the singing, comedy, and musical instruments played. The event goal was to raise $13,000 and to date they have raised over $17,000 for the Chapel Choir Mission Trip!  A big Thank You to the Youth Committee, Chapel Choir leaders, auction donors, and all who participated in the auction or contributed towards their fundraising goal.

Senior Spotlight
We celebrate Nathan’s upcoming graduation!

Nathan Broyles is graduating from homeschool and will be attending the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he will be studying computer science and cybersecurity. We asked Nathan some questions to tell us a little more about himself and his experiences at Broadway:

What has been one of your favorite memories while growing up at Broadway?
There’s a lot to choose from, but one of my favorites was in first or second grade, we had extra time after our normal Sunday School lesson and we had a paper airplane making contest in the gym.

Do you have a favorite song from your time at Broadway?
I’ve always liked “Recollection of Joy.”

What are some of your hopes and dreams for the future?
I’m not really sure, to be honest. I’ll just have to see where life takes me.

What advice would you give to an incoming high schooler in the youth group at Broadway?
I think the most important thing is to try to get to know people. I used to just show up and sit in the corner, maybe talking to one or two friends, but I realized that I missed out on getting to know a lot of really cool people.

A note to Nathan from his parents:
It has been a joy and privilege being your parents and watching you grow into the amazing person you are today. This next chapter of your life will be challenging, exciting, and fun, and we know you will be successful. We hope you know how proud we are and how much we love you!

The Undoing Gender Workshop: Re-Imagining Inclusive & Equitable Congregational Leadership
Friday, May 20 and Saturday, May 21 in Room 302

Broadway has the opportunity to be the first church to offer an important workshop for congregations on the topic of gender and gender equity.  This will be a two-day session beginning Friday, May 20 from 5:30 – 8:00 p.m., with a light meal offered and Saturday, May 21 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., morning coffee and pastries as well as lunch will be offered.

Workshop Description: When you hear the word leader, who comes to mind? What does a leader look like to you? Sound like? What’s their gender or race?
“The Undoing Gender” course was created to undo our preconceived gendered notions of leadership and re-imagine new and expansive ideas of leadership. This 4-session course uses an intersectional lens to address congregational gendered blind spots and create strategies for effectively working toward more equitable outcomes for women in the church. On the individual level, the workshop provides guiding prompts and space for self-reflection and small group discussion. On the organizational level, the use of research-informed workplace strategies are highlighted for addressing outcomes of gender inequality before, during, and after the hiring process.

Situated in hope, “The Undoing Gender” workshop seeks to move congregations closer to their goals of inclusivity and equity through congregational polices, practices, and theologies. Read the full description here

Room In the Inn
Broadway has participated in our local Room in the Inn ministry for over a decade. We work in partnership with other churches to provide food and overnight sleeping accommodations for men experiencing homelessness during the hottest and coldest months of the year.

For the last two years, Room in the Inn has been suspended due to concerns about the spread of COVID-19. We are excited to announce that Room in the Inn will resume this summer and that Broadway will be participating during July and August. Volunteers will be needed to provided transportation and meals for our guests as well as Innkeepers who can stay overnight.

Stay tuned as more information will be shared in upcoming issues of the Window. Contact Peter Nelson to volunteer or for more information.
