COMMUNITY CORNER
Happy Birthday, Genie!
We are celebrating one year since we obtained our Community Ministries cargo van. Genie, named in honor of former Broadway pastor, Gene Thompson, has had a very busy 12 months. The van was purchased through a generous grant from the Ryan Foundation.
Here’s a brief recap of what Genie has been doing.
- Making over 100 pickups at the Tarrant Area Food Bank to stock the shelves in our May Street Market—each week, we assist about 80 households who are struggling with food insecurity
- Delivering thousands of meals to our neighbors at Samaritan House while their campus was closed ruing the COVID-19 pandemic
- Delivering groceries weekly to families impacted by the Fort Worth ISD school closures during the pandemic
- Supplying hundreds of cases of water following the serve winter weather in February
- Delivering “Welcome Home” baskets to families transitioning out of homelessness through our partnership with Tarrant County Homeless Coalition
- Transporting diapers and wipes from the Fort Worth Junior League for the new diaper bank in our Community Center
- Delivering hundreds of school uniforms to students and families at Leonard Middle School
Most recently, Genie has been transporting furniture donations and household goods to setup apartments for welcoming two Afghan families who are resettling in Fort Worth.
We give thanks for this wonderful gift and the blessing it has been to our Community Ministries efforts. Keep watching for where Genie will show up next.

Agape Meal Changes We are making two changes to our weekly Agape Meal. Starting this Thursday, November 4, the meal service time will be from 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. This change will help accommodate the upcoming end to Daylight Savings Time and ensure a safe meal service for our guests. Additionally, this Thursday, November 4, we will transition the meal service to the Courtyard. For the last 18 months, we have been providing hot, to-go meals for our guests and we are grateful that we have been able to continue the Agape Meal, even during the COVID-19 pandemic; however, we are excited to welcome our guests to a sit-down meal. The Courtyard environment will help ensure everyone’s safety and will provide greater opportunity for connection, fellowship, and relationship building hallmarks of Broadway’s Agape Meal for the last 26 years.
Doors to the Community Center entrance will open at 5:00 and guests will be escorted to their table in the Courtyard. Guests will receive individual plated meals rather than serving food family style as we have done in the past. Volunteers will be masked to ensure everyone’s safety. Tickets are not required, and everyone is welcome. Contact Peter Nelson for more information about these changes for our Agape Meal.

Winter Coat Distribution Success On Tuesday, we conducted our annual winter coat distribution, just in time for this week’s cooler temperatures. Every year, we partner with First Mission to distribute coats, gloves, and hats to our neighbors in need. Guests must show their ID card from Tarrant County Homeless Coalition to qualify. So far, we have distributed over 130 coats, and we anticipate distributing nearly 200 total. Thanks to everyone who generously donated coats and winter gear as well as those who have given financially to support our Community Ministries. This year’s distribution was a great success thanks to Dawn Shepard, Community Center Director, and our outstanding team of volunteers: Helen Beasley, June Parish, Jeff and Ellen Wolfskill, and Tom and Linda Kwentus.

Cloud Covered Streets DelayBroadway is partnering with Cloud Covered Streets, a faith-based ministry that provides mobile showers, haircuts, and laundry facilities. They were originally scheduled to be at our Community Center on Friday, November 5; however, there have been some delays to the completion of their mobile trailer and will not be on site that day. Stay tuned to the Window for updates on when this service will begin for our guests and how you can volunteer.

Creek Church Volunteer Service Day Creek Church held a service day on October 31 and their volunteers assembled 500 hygiene kits for the Community Center! We give thanks for the many community friends and partners who support Broadway Baptist Church in these generous ways. If you have a group interested in service projects, contact Dawn Shepard.

Grants Available for Members in NeedMany members of our congregation are feeling the financial effects of the COVID 19 crisis. Some have been furloughed from their jobs, some have incurred medical expenses, while others have lost their livelihood altogether. To assist with the many needs arising from this crisis, funds from the Congregational Care and the pastoral care budgets are being made available for our members. Each grant amount will be up to $500, depending on the need of the individual or family. We are asking that members in need of assistance complete a simple grant application form. Information from the application will be kept in strict confidence. Our Pastoral staff will review the applications and make the grant assignments. If you and/or your family could use some help during these uncertain times, please email Fran Patterson for an application. Also, if you are looking for ways to help during this crisis, please contact Fran.
