BROADWAY CELEBRATES

Baby Dedication of Jackson Ryan
On Sunday, February 13, we celebrated the dedication service of Jackson Ryan. We rejoice with the Ryan family in this special day and look forward to being Jackson’s family of faith.

New Member Join Broadway

Sunday, February 13, Randy Jenson made the decision to become a member of Broadway.  Randy is married to Gladys Jennings Jenson and he is standing in front of the window (Jesus knocking) that the Jennings family contributed to Broadway when the sanctuary was built in 1952. We give thanks for the unique gifts and experiences each new member brings to our growing congregation. Please join us in welcoming Randy to the Broadway family!

Youth Mid-Winter Retreat
The BBC Youth enjoyed their Mid-Winter Retreat to Camp Broadway on February 5 and 6. The theme of the weekend was “Connect” as they developed their connection with God, with each other, and within themselves. 34 of our youth were able to attend. The students explored Fuller Youth Institute’s  “Faith in an Anxious World” curriculum, enjoyed a glow-in-the-dark version of Capture the Flag, experienced the beauty of our camp, and led and participated in worship throughout the weekend. It was a wonderful time of connection and spiritual formation.  Many thanks to Minister DeShay Jackson who led our music and worship for the weekend and to the teachers/chaperones who gave up their weekend to lead our youth.

Audre Lorde reminds us that self-care can be a political act.
By Irie Price

“Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.”

Poet and essayist Audre Lorde wrote these words 34 years ago, asserting that Black, queer, and poor bodies are deserving and worthy of care. Though “self-care” has become synonymous with bubble baths and scented candles, Lorde saw self-care as a daring act of maintaining personhood in a world constantly threatening to erase it.

Lorde’s message was especially important for Black people, queer people, women of color, and those from non-affluent backgrounds. Many were told they’d need to work twice as hard as their white male counterparts because of the prevalence of systemic injustices. Societal messages also communicated that Black bodies – lynched, exploited for labor, and viewed with disgust or dread – were not worthy of care, and that queer bodies were something to be othered and feared rather than cared for. People socialized as female may have been taught they should sacrifice their sense of self on behalf of others. And growing up in a working-class family may also have complicated relationships with work, creating the idea that self-care was just a frivolous luxury.

Born in 1934 in New York City to parents who immigrated from the Caribbean, Audre Lorde understood these challenges. She was a Black woman, a mother, a lesbian, and a feminist who explored the intersection of race, gender, and class in the U.S. with unblinking honesty. She also understood that taking time to acknowledge her personhood was an important way of affirming that her Black life mattered.

Black women like Simone Biles and Naomi Osaka have reminded us that self-care can still be considered both political and controversial. But, as Lorde reminds us, rest is not self-indulgent. It is essential, and it is divine.

CAMP BROADWAY

Firewood For Sale!
Just in time for the winter weather, Camp Broadway is having a Firewood Sale.  We have plenty of wood for everyone’s fireplaces or firepits, all you need to do is come and get it!

Funds from our sale will help us purchase materials and install a new electric entry gate and entry fencing at Camp Broadway. The addition of the new gate and fencing will help us in several ways…a nicer “first impression” when people drive by or come for a tour; easier access for guests, especially at night or during inclement weather; and better security for all.

We are selling 1/8 of a cord of wood for $35 and ½ of a cord of wood for $100.  You can pick out the pieces you want and then load them in your car.

A very generous offer has been made by Matt Ferguson:  if you would like wood delivered to your home, Matt will deliver and stack it for you.  The price for this service is $70 for a 1/8th of a cord and $200 for a half cord.  All money goes to the Camp Broadway gate fund.

Full disclosure:  The camp is experiencing Oak Wilt disease and Emerald Ash Bore.  Camp Director, Fran Patterson, has been working with the Texas A&M Forestry Department for advisement. They give the ok to sell because all of the wood to be sold has been cured for at least one year, so the threat of spreading either Oak Wilt or Emerald Ash Bore is not a problem.  We do ask that the wood be kept within Tarrant County.

Call, text, or email Fran at 817 845-8876 or fpatterson@broadwaybc.org to arrange a pickup or delivery time. Thank you for your continued support of Camp Broadway!

Contact Peter Nelson with questions.

MORE THAN ONE WAY
Grants Available for Members in Need
Many members of our congregation are feeling the financial effects of the COVID 19 crisis.  Some have been furloughed from their jobs, some have incurred medical expenses, while others have lost their livelihood altogether.  To assist with the many needs arising from this crisis, funds from the Congregational Care and the pastoral care budgets are being made available for our members.

Each grant amount will be up to $500, depending on the need of the individual or family.  We are asking that members in need of assistance complete a simple grant application form.  Information from the application will be kept in strict confidence.  Our Pastoral staff will review the applications and make the grant assignments.

If you and/or your family could use some help during these uncertain times, please email Fran Patterson for an application.  Also, if you are looking for ways to help during this crisis, please contact Fran.
