BROADWAY ACTS

Justice Committee Seeks Support to Reduce and End Chronic Homelessness
The Broadway Justice Committee has been meeting with local officials on the issue of homelessness. While Broadway continues its decades-long leadership in providing assistance to our neighbors who are unsheltered, we are now working to help drastically reduce or even end certain types of homelessness in our community.

Our community is eligible to receive significant federal funding for building  permanent supportive housing for persons experiencing chronic homelessness within Fort Worth and Tarrant County. The Tarrant County Homeless Coalition (TCHC) has submitted a proposal to the county and to the cities of Ft. Worth and Arlington for designating a portion of the recently received ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act) funds toward this issue. The Justice Committee is advocating for the full support of the coalition’s request with these government entities.

Tarrant County met last week and approved nearly all of the funding the Coalition asked for—about $40M. We had five Broadway members attend the meeting. They reported that Judge Glen Whitley mentioned that all the comments and statements the Court had received from citizens had been influential. The Justice Committee asks for your attendance. The coalition asks for our support by being present at the City Council Work Session on Tuesday, March 22 at 1:00 p.m. at City Hall.  If you can attend this meeting, please let Katherine Godby know as soon as possible so that she can confirm your name and provide you additional information.

We also need Broadway members to attend other meetings and to contact City Councilmembers by phone, email, or letter to let them know of your support for the Tarrant County Homeless Coalition’s funding proposal.  Anyone on the Justice Committee can provide you with the information you need.  Justice Committee Members: Bob Madeja, Chris Mack-Lloyd, Elise Walker, Harriet Harrel, Josh Lucas, Kristofer Schleicher, Lydia Bean, Susannah McDaniel, and Katherine Godby, Chair.

COMMUNITY CORNER

Broadway Supports Ukraine Relief Efforts
Last week, Broadway contributed $12,450 to the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship’s relief efforts in the Ukraine. Part of this came from the church’s Disaster Relief funds and part of it came from the offering that was collected at our churchwide luncheon on Sunday, March 6. An additional $4,150 was donated this week bringing our total to $16,600!

Thank you for your generosity. Contributions continue to come in and there is still time for you to participate. You can donate on the GIVE page on Broadway’s website or give directly to CBF on their website.

All money collected will be given to the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship’s relief efforts directed primarily to the Village of Hope ministry in Kyiv. Sadly, the foster family ministry serving street children was bombed by the Russian military last week. Fortunately no one was on the property at the time of the attack and most of those served by Village of Hope are now out of Kyiv. Please pray for those who have fled their homes to seek safety in the midst of war.

February by the Numbers
February was an interesting month for our Community Center and Ministries. We had some closures and cancellations during the month because of freezing temperatures and icy conditions. Even with those closures, we still had a busy month providing essential services to our neighbors and guests.

Here’s a brief report of services provided in February:

  • Sack Lunches: 793 lunches distributed
  • Groceries: 138 households served (340 persons)
  • Agape Meal: 155 meals served (two weeks cancelled due to inclement weather)
  • Adult Clothing Ministry: 47 people served
  • Rental Assistance: $1,145 in financial assistance provided
  • Diaper Bank: 15 families served

Thanks to our wonderful staff and volunteers who make these services possible and those who contribute financially to support the ministries and mission of Broadway.

Agape Meal Time Change
With the start of Daylight Savings Time, we have moved the time for our Thursday Agape Meal. Starting this Thursday, March 17, dinner will be served from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. in the church Courtyard. Everyone is welcome.

This week, representatives from the City of Fort Worth will be at the Agape Meal to provide COVID vaccines and booster shots for anyone who needs them.

For more information about our Agape Meal or to volunteer, contact Peter Nelson for more information.

Broadway Welcomes BIND
Broadway is pleased to welcome our newest Shared Spaces partner: Brain Injury Network of DFW (BIND). They are a non-profit organization that provides tools and a bridge of support to adult brain injury survivors across DFW so they can reconnect to life, the community, and the workplace. BIND has been providing these services in North Texas for the last ten years and recently expanded their services in Tarrant County.

BIND helps adult survivors of stroke, traumatic brain injury, and brain cancer recover and rebuild healthy, productive lives. Members are adults age 18+ from diverse backgrounds. Together they work to strengthen and regain physical health, manage emotional and mental health, and restore financial independence. BIND is the only brain injury clubhouse in Texas.

BIND will be using two rooms in youth area on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays to provide clubhouse support for their members. Click here to learn more about BIND.

Cloud Covered Streets at Broadway
Broadway is pleased to welcome Cloud Covered Streets to the Community Center. This is a faith-based ministry that provides showers, laundry facilities, and haircuts to those in need. On their last visit, Cloud Covered Streets had 34 guests use their services—25 used the shower facilities, 12 used the laundry services, and 14 guests got haircuts. We are so thankful to offer these services to our guests and neighbors.

Cloud Covered Streets will be at Broadway’s Community Center on alternating Fridays from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Volunteers are needed to help, especially those who are qualified to cut hair. Click here to volunteer.

MORE THAN ONE WAY
Grants Available for Members in Need
Many members of our congregation are feeling the financial effects of the COVID 19 crisis.  Some have been furloughed from their jobs, some have incurred medical expenses, while others have lost their livelihood altogether.  To assist with the many needs arising from this crisis, funds from the Congregational Care and the pastoral care budgets are being made available for our members.

Each grant amount will be up to $500, depending on the need of the individual or family.  We are asking that members in need of assistance complete a simple grant application form.  Information from the application will be kept in strict confidence.  Our Pastoral staff will review the applications and make the grant assignments.

If you and/or your family could use some help during these uncertain times, please email Fran Patterson for an application.  Also, if you are looking for ways to help during this crisis, please contact Fran.
