ECUMENICAL PARTNER SPOTLIGHT
Introducing the Ecumenical Partner Spotlight
By Sara Kelm, Broadway and Denominational and Ecumenical Committee member

Broadway Baptist has made some good friends over the years. Our church financially and logistically supports a number of denominational and ecumenical organizations that are doing important work regionally and nationally. Some of these partnerships are long-standing, like with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, and some relationships are more recent, like with the Alliance of Baptists. Some partnerships are with international organizations, like Baptist News Global, while others are more local, like Tarrant Churches Together. Broadway’s affiliation with these organizations—and the work of the Denominational and Ecumenical Relations Committee—“serves to remind Broadway of its connection to the greater church, both Baptist and otherwise,” as committee member David Grebel says.

A main task of the Denominational and Ecumenical Relations Committee is to maintain and advocate for these relationships. Along with David, the members of the committee are Harriet Harral (chair), Lydia Bean, Leta Tillman, Cara Stoneham, Sara Kelm, and Ryon Price. “We are a diverse group with a variety of connections to our partners,” as Harriet says. Some of us have spent many years working with the CBF and other Baptist organizations; others have been involved in local interfaith organizations or visited our partners in the Republic of Georgia. Harriet sums up the work of our committee well: “To help Broadway benefit from the denominational and ecumenical relationships we have; to support the work of our partners; to help individuals and the congregation as a whole develop a deeper understanding of our relationships in a larger faith family; to increase our impact on religious and social justice issues through partnering with like-minded entities.” Understanding, supporting, and connecting with our partners is part of who we are as Broadway Baptist.

However, we know it can be easy to lose track of which organizations we are affiliated with and what current work each is doing. So, we are starting an Ecumenical Partner Spotlight in the Window, in which we will highlight the organizations that Broadway supports, along with links to helpful resources, virtual events, and ways to get involved. We want to connect the people of Broadway with the organizations Broadway supports.

So, make sure you look for the Ecumenical Partner Spotlight, starting in the Window later this month! If you have any questions about the work of our committee or the Ecumenical Partner Spotlight. please contact us at info@broadwybc.org.
COMMUNITY CORNER
MLK Day of Service
January 18 is the MLK Holiday and many businesses and schools will be closed. In years past, Broadway has provided opportunities for this to be a day of service. We want to continue to do this, even during the COVID-19 pandemic. Broadway’s Community Center has teamed up with our Family Ministries team to provide ways you can safely serve this MLK Day. Children and Club 56 families can assemble hygiene kits and Youth families can assemble blessings bags. Hygiene kits include personal items like soap, shampoo, toothpaste, razors, and bandages and are distributed to guests at our Community Center. Blessing bags include non-perishable food (e.g., granola bars, crackers), bottled water, and hand sanitizer. Members are encouraged to keep blessings bags in your vehicle to share with those in need.

Families can pick up supplies and instructions from the Community Center on Wednesday – Friday from 9:00 – noon or 1:30 – 2:30. Assemble the bags together as a family. Bring your completed bags to drop off curbside at the Community Center on Monday, January 18 between 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Those who participate will receive a fun prize. Contact Jennifer Davis to coordinate a different pick-up or drop-off time.

Community Center Donations
We are collecting items that are used frequently in our sack lunches and our Agape Meals. Last month, Broadway distributed 1,166 sack lunches and 300 Agape Meals to our homeless friends and neighbors. We need the following items:
•    Small bags of chips
•    Granola bars
•    Peanut butter crackers
•    Small pre-packaged desserts
•    Bottled water
•    Canned or bottled sodas
All items should be pre-packaged and ready for safe distribution to individuals. Contact Dawn Shepard to arrange a time to drop off your donation at the Community Center.
MORE THAN ONE WAY
Grants Available for Members in Need
Many members of our congregation are feeling the financial effects of the COVID 19 crisis.  Some have been furloughed from their jobs, some have incurred medical expenses, while others have lost their livelihood altogether.  In an attempt to assist with the many needs arising from this crisis, funds from the Congregational Care and the pastoral care budgets are being made available for our members.

Each grant amount will be up to $500, depending on the need of the individual or family.  We are asking that members in need of assistance complete a simple grant application form.  Information from the application will be kept in strict confidence.  Our Pastoral staff will review the applications and make the grant assignments.

If you and/or your family could use some help during these uncertain times, please email Fran Patterson for an application.  Also, if you are looking for ways to help during this crisis, please contact Fran.
