Baptist Women in Ministry
This past Sunday we celebrated Baptist Women in Ministry in worship. Jennifer Davis preached a powerful sermon “Now Is The Time To Prophesy” and the worship leaders shared a beautiful litany written by Tiffany McClain.
We give thanks for Broadway’s commitment to women in ministry which began in December of 1973 when Dr. John Claypool brought a recommendation before the Board of Deacons to ordain Broadway member, Jeanette Zachery, to the Ministry. The recommendation was passed unanimously and Ms. Zachery was ordained to the Chaplaincy. Dr. Claypool later preached a sermon titled “The Bible and Women” on June 22, 1975 which strongly called for opening the leadership of the church to women. Broadway’s Bylaws were revised in 1980 and the first three women Deacons were ordained on November 23, 1980: Ginny Hickman, Mary Ann Price, and Wanda Ryan. Today 24 of the 39 Board of Deacon members are women.
Worship leaders this past Sunday, March 26, included Carter Riggsby & Susanna Schleicher, Acolytes; Ginny Hickman, one of the first three women deacons ordained at Broadway, November 23, 1980; Kennedy Mayer, Member of the 11th Grade Class; Thaynara Matias, Member of the Club 56 Class; Emily Davis, Youth Ministry Coordinator; Toi Mack, Children’s Ministry Coordinator; Tiffany McClain, Music & Worship Coordinator; Fran Patterson, Pastor of Congregational Care; and Jennifer Baergen Davis, Pastor of Family Ministries.
Thank you to Lou Anne Mauldin, Broadway’s Church Archivist, for providing historical details included in this article.

Justice Committee Call to Action: Speakers Needed for Commissioner’s Court
The Broadway Justice Committee Action Group is working for reform at the Tarrant County Jail where over 40 people have died in the last three years. Progress is being made and we need to keep addressing the court to keep the issues we are fighting for at the forefront of each Commissioner’s mind.
Broadway folks are needed to join us and give comments before the Tarrant County Commissioner’s Court at 10:00 am on either the 1st, 3rd or both Tuesday mornings of each month. Those who have spoken before are greatly appreciated and encouraged to return.
The Justice Committee needs your help to keep up the momentum! Sign up to speak at an upcoming date. Those who have spoken before will be present to support you at Court and training and sample scripts are provided. “Not only are we fighting for Justice within our community, we are learning about our community.” – Katherine Godby, Justice Committee Chair
If you have even a spark of interest, please contact Merl Glasscock, with the Justice Committee Action Group, by submitting your contact info below to learn more or schedule a date to support.
Ministry Intern Position Opening
Broadway is excited to announce that we are hiring a Ministry Intern to join our church staff. We are seeking interested and qualified candidates for a paid, multi-year intern position which provides persons with real-world pastoral and church leadership experience. The position is ideal for seminary/divinity students who feel called to ministry in a congregational setting.
This position is being funded by a generous gift from Broadway members. Since these types of church opportunities are often limited for women, LGBTQ persons, and persons of color, special consideration will be given to these candidates in the application and selection process.
Position responsibilities are estimated at 20 hours per week. Applications are being accepted through April 15 with the position scheduled to start in the summer of 2023. Click the link below for the full job description or to complete the interest form. Interested persons can also access and submit the form on our church website. Broadway members are encouraged to share this job opening with friends and contacts who may be qualified candidates. Contact Peter Nelson with questions.
Easter Lilies Available to Order
Easter lilies are available for purchase in memory or honor of a loved one. Lilies will decorate our sanctuary on Easter Sunday and will be available to take home after worship.
Broadway Casserole Ministry
We are excited to announce that the Broadway Casserole Ministry is back!
Do you know a church member who needs a little help or cheer? Broadway’s Congregational Care Ministry has a group of people who are making delicious food and will deliver to someone who could use a bit of loving care. It may be someone who has lost a loved one, had a new baby, is experiencing illness or surgery, or maybe it is a caregiver who could benefit from a hot meal. Whatever the need, we are here to help.
A special thank you to Claudine Marion, Rosemary Hammond Graham, and Elizabeth Roper, for selecting recipes and organizing this ministry. The casserole options include vegan and gluten free meals.
If you know someone who could benefit from this ministry, please contact Claudine, Rosemary, and Elizabeth by submitting a Casserole Request.
Committee on Committee Seeks Member Nominations
Broadway’s Committee on Committee is seeking member nominations for the 2023-24 committee year. There is no limit to how many names you may submit and members are encouraged to nominate themselves. Consider how you or someone you know can make a meaningful contribution to the ministries and mission of the church. Nominees will be contacted to learn more about committee openings and opportunities.
How to submit: Physical copies of the committee interest form are available in the church business office and centrum literature racks. Online submissions can be made using the Committee Interest Form and on the BBC mobile app under “Events”.
Nominees should be active church members who are consistent contributors.
Committee members serve staggered three-year terms which begin October 1. One to three seats come open on each committee each year. Contact Committee on Committee Chair, Lauren Ferguson with questions.

Community Center Volunteers Needed
We are seeing an increase in our community needs for food and clothing, which means we need additional volunteers to work in our Community Center. Most volunteer assistance is needed Monday – Friday between 9:00 a.m. – noon, especially on Fridays. We also have some volunteer opportunities on Wednesday afternoons (2:00 – 5:00 p.m.) and Tuesday evenings (6:00 – 8:00 p.m.).
Volunteer tasks include: checking in guests, assisting them with shopping in our food pantry or clothing rooms, stocking shelves, and packing groceries. If you are interested in volunteering or learning more about volunteer opportunities, contact Holly Alexander for more information.
Adult Clothing Needs
With increased demand for clothing, the shelves in our adult clothing room are starting to look a little bare. If you’re doing spring cleaning around your house and have items to donate, we would love to help them find a new home. Our biggest need right now is men’s clothes—most specifically, comfortable walking shoes (sizes 8-12). You can drop off your donation anytime the Community Center is open or in the blue bin outside the Centrum office. If you don’t have items to donate but still want to help, you can make a financial gift to help support our adult clothing ministry. Thank you.
Cloud Covered Streets
Broadway will again welcome Cloud Covered Streets to the Community Center on Friday, March 31. This faith-based ministry provides showers, laundry facilities, and haircuts to those in need. We are so thankful to offer these services to our guests and neighbors.
Cloud Covered Streets will be at Broadway’s Community Center on the first, third, and fifth Fridays every month from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Volunteers are needed to help, especially those who are qualified to cut hair. Click here to volunteer.
Here is a list of upcoming dates for Cloud Covered Streets at Broadway:
- March 31
- April 7
- April 21
- May 5
